It was with much anticipation that I cracked open the covers of ‘Storm,’ the third and final installment in the epic The Huntress trilogy featuring daring and courageous Mouse with her loyal crew.

Following the breath-taking rescue of her father from the evil mystiks, Mouse is holed up in Hackles, the Sky fortress. When a mysterious letter arrives for her father, Mouse finds herself being confined to the fortress for her own safety.

With eternal winter declared, and Stag’s army razing all in its path, Mouse refuses to stay hidden away and plans her escape.  An ancient evil is rising, the Opals are calling and a battle to save the world is afoot.

The Huntress trilogy is one of my favourite middle grade series of recent times. Visceral, grimy, thrilling and heart-breaking. I read each page with my heart in my mouth as Mouse lurched from one life-threatening situation to another, willing her to scrape through unharmed.

In amongst the battles and blood-shed there moments of real tenderness which showed another facet of Mouse’s personality.  I also enjoyed the exchanges between Mouse and her troubled younger brother, Sparrow. It would seem that siblings bicker even when the survival of the world as they know it rests on a knife’s edge.

A thrilling, wind-buffeted whirlwind of a read for anyone aged nine or above.
