International Book Giving Day 2018

International World Book Giving Day is now in its sixth year and continues to spread far and wide across the globe, with people in countries such as Nepal, India, Canada, Romania, South Africa, UK, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Fiji, Nigerian, Czech Republic, USA, Cambodia and the Philippines.  Phew!  It is run entirely by volunteers and aims to celebrate and encourage a love for reading in children.

I am thrilled to be part of the team who get to reveal the poster for this year’s book-giving shindig.  I am even more thrilled that this year, the fabulous poster has been illustrated by one of my favourite picture book creators – Elys Dolan!  So without further ado, here it is….

book giving day (1)

Elys’s brilliant design features a whole host of book-loving characters, including some from her hilarious recent book: ‘Knighthood for Beginners‘ (OUP 2017).  Elys is an author and illustrator based in Cambridge who has created some of my family’s favourite picture books.  ‘Weasels‘ is the first one we read – my husband laughed so much he took it to a family gathering to share with his brother.  I personally love the excellent punning in ‘Steven Seagull – Action Hero,’ whilst ‘The Doughnut of Doom,’ and ‘Mr. Bunny’s Chocolate Factory‘ are the favourites of Book Boys 1 and 2!

The glorious poster is available on the Book Giving Day website for schools, libraries and book shops to download and proudly display.

On the 14th February, participants are encouraged to gift a book to a child.  There are lots of different ways people have chosen to do this:

  • By leaving a book in a waiting room for someone to enjoy.
  • By giving a book to a friend or family member.
  • Donate lightly used books to your local hospital or shelter, or to an organisation which redistributes books to those who need them.
  • Donating books to your child’s school or pre-school.

Your imagination really is your limit!  I know people who ‘hide’ them in their local area for others to find – keep your eyes peeled and follow #BookGivingDay

If you do decide to gift a book or are lucky enough to find one, please do let me know in the comments below!

If you’d like to join in a Twitter chat with Elys Dolan and myself this Spring, make sure you follow @funnybookchat for updates and reminders. I have some other brilliant authors and illustrators joining me in the meantime.

We found one of your books in Chessington zoo theme park by the Monkey enclosure! My children were so excited to take the book back to our hotel room and read it! When we finish the story we’ll be taking the book to school on ‘book swap’ day so another little person can enjoy it and we can pick up another exciting read! Thank you again (please email me if you’d like a pic of us finding the book for publicity 😁)
