‘Pretty,’ by Canizales.

A witchy tale, perfect for Halloween and young book enthusiasts everywhere.

Witch is just enjoying an early morning brew when she hears a ping from her laptop.  It’s Troll, inviting her on a romantic picnic. As she sets off through the woods to meet him, the woodland animals make a few helpful suggestions as to how she might make herself look a bit prettier. By the time she arrives at the swamp, Witch is barely recognisable. But what will Troll think?

I have to confess to disliking the woodland creatures poor Witch met on her travels – I didn’t think they were being particularly good friends! I was therefore delighted by the wholly unexpected (and slightly macabre) twist at the end and I’m sure young children will be too.

As well as being deliciously dark and boldly illustrated, ‘Pretty’ packs a powerful punch about how easy it is to lose your sense of self if you listen too much to other people’s opinions. And how people tend to like you more if you’re just being yourself.

A funny but thought-provoking tale of magic and self-belief.
