‘Cat Learns to Listen at Moonlight School,’ by Simon Puttock, illustrated by Ali Pye.

As we enter the month of October, I am looking forward to sharing with you books which celebrate Autumn and all things spooky.  My very first offering is the gorgeous ‘Cat Learns to Listen at Moonlight School,’ the third title in the Moonlight School series.

Tonight, Miss Moon is taking her class of pupils out for a magical moonlight nature walk to search for special and interesting objects. All the animals are listening carefully when Miss Moon explains how important it is to stay together, all the animals except Cat who is fiddling with her clipboard.

Whilst the other creatures are busy finding starry leaves, snails and swirly stones which might be snails, Cat gets distracted by a flittery firefly and wanders off into the woods alone.  When Miss Moon and Cat’s classmates realise, they start calling for her, but Cat is too far away to hear.  Luckily, they hear Cat’s cry for help and follow a trail of clues until they find a lonely and frightened feline.

They finish the night back in school discussing their finds and Cat has learnt a valuable lesson about listening to his teacher and not wandering off!

This book was an instant hit with my son, who instantly made me re-read it (and the other books from the series) – a sure sign of a great book.  I think one of the reasons it IMG_1372was so popular is that it taps into every child’s fear of getting lost but then reassures them at the end.

The beautiful soft purple and blue illustrations by Ali Pye give a warm and gentle feel to the moonlight-washed pages and superbly complement Puttock’s warm hug of a story.  I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this fabulous series to anybody with young children looking for their next bedtime read.
